Following the passage of the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill (Firearms and Customs Laws) 2026, the Department is working with state and territory Firearms Registries to implement the measures. In Australia, responsibility for firearm matters is shared between the Commonwealth and state and territory governments. The Department of Home Affairs grants permission to import certain types of firearms and firearm-related articles under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956.
